My beloved bitch is pregnant

Today is the 42nd day of a pregnancy of my beloved bitch. The puppies should be delivered around the 14th of February - on the Valentines Day! It is the first pregnancy in our kennel, so all of you can imagine our joy. To be able to remeber all the details I have  decided to describe the most important moments of Shanga's pregnancy.

December the 1st, 2012
We noticed a few drops of blood on the floor. It meant that Shanga was in a heat ( in a few weeks earlier than we expected). On the fourth day we went to the vet to do some examination. Following the cytology test we still had some time.

December the 6th, 2012
The progesteron test said that the ovulation was close and we should have met a dog. After having come home we started to pack our stuff and we left for Denmark to meet the greatest dog.

December the 8th, 2012
Today we met a wonderful family - the owners of the stud and their nice dog Turner. So far we knew him from photos but when we saw him face to face he looked much better! A strong built dog with big bones, full of power, energy and vitality. Shanga and Turner liked each other from the first look and we became the witnesses of the dogs' courtship. Turner adored Shanga, didnt let her to go away further than two metres! Shanga was delighted. We were happy because she was happy but later we felt a bit dissapointed because Turner had't tried to take Shanga.

December the 12th, 13th, 14th, 2012
On that days Shanga and Turner mated successfully. As it was Shanga's first time she didn't know exactly what to do, so the date lasted three hours. But on the second and the third day they both were experienced so it went quite fast. We appreciated it as the weather wasn't nice.

January the 12th, 2013
There have been no symptoms so far. Judging from the Shanga's behaviour we can say that the only change is that she seems to sleep more during a day. In order to confirm the pregnancy we have done the ultrasound  scan which has revealed that we are going to have puppies!

January the 15th, 2013
We have noticed the first symptoms. Shanga's nipples are bigger! apart from this she still sleeps much and she has put on weight a bit. Today her chestline is 84 (it's 2 cm more).

January 23rd, 2013
Today is 42nd day of the pregnancy and according to doctor's words the threat of miscarriage has passed away. Shanga is ok, walking she doesn't run or jump, she would rather stay by us. She is a bit bigger but we still can't notice the pregnancy shape.
On 42nd day of pregnancy the organs of the embryos have already been shaped, the spine and fingers have been still evaluating. The embryos are almost 6,5 cm.

January 24th, 2013
Today is 43rd day of pregnancy and the 7th week has just started. It is the time of dynamic growing of puppies. They become  much bigger and bigger each day so probably we will see the pregnancy clearly very soon. But at the moment there are still no visual symptoms, unfortunately. Shanga is fine, sleeps a lot and while walking she moves slowly. We very often need to wait for her because she stays behind us. She starts lacking her hair as well. She is being hungry all the time so we have changed the food for her. Now she gets the special food for future mothers and born babies. She weighs 46,7  kg (2,7 kg more)

January 28th, 2013
We can hear how the hearts of puppies are beating using the stethoscope! Her nipples are really big now.

January 30th, 2013
It's 47th day of the pregnancy. Shanga's belly is clearly round. It is 89 cm ( 14cm more). We have noticed something interesting. When shanga feels babies inside she moves immediately. She doesn't know the feeling and she is confused what it is going on. During the walk today she was full of energy and behaved as a crazy dog!

 February 2nd, 2013
It is 52nd day of the pregnancy today. Shanga becomes more and more rounded. I hope she doesn't put on more than she should. The girth of her belly is 93 cm, so it is 4 more. She is calm, walking she stays behind us, so I assume it is tiring for her.

February 08th, 2013
The 56th day is passing away. Shanga's belly is big and tough when you touch it. She still eats a lot. She weights 50kg, so she has put on 6 kg. She feels good although she is ponderous. She likes to lie on the floor and rest. We started to take her the temperature ( it's around 38 C) two days ago, we have also shaven her belly around the nipples, which are really big now!

February 10th, 2013
The 59th day is finishing. Shanga is quiet and relaxed. She still sleeps a lot. Her belly has come down and it is soft. The girth of her belly is 99 cm now (that's 20 cm more)! We observe her and look forward to seeing any symptoms of the puppybirth. We stiil take her a temperature twice a day (the average is around 37,5), but it is very changeable and probably it won't be a symptom for us.

February 12th, 2013
Shanga woke me up at 2.30 at night. She was anxious and she was moving around, as if she had been looking for the right place. What is more she was gasping loudly and she scratched the floor from time to time. Surely, the proces of  puppiesbirth has started! We saw her confusion combined with some pain. The only thing we could do was being  with her and stroking her.

The first part of  the proces of delivering puppies last long hours. At 22.55 started the second part when breaking the water (rupture of membranes) took place. We knew that the puppies would appear very soon.

February 13th, 2013
Around 01.00 at night the first fetal expulsion started. After half an hour we welcomed the first boy. Though it was the first time for Shanga she knew exactly what to do. After licking and cleaning him we took him to take a weight and gave him back to his mum to feed him. After another half an hour the first girl appeared. For next puppy boy we need to wait more than an hour.

At 4.40 almost in the morning next girl joined us. We all were very tired but very happy as well!  From the x-ray we knew that there was one more puppy and that was not the end. For the third girl we had to wait more than 5 hours. She was born after 10.00 in the morning. She was the lighter but she was doing well. All puppies can suck but it is a challenge for them to find and hold the big nipples. That's why we need to help them. They put the weight on and are stronger and stronger. They are a great joy for us!
